Lucky Bamboo

We get many questions asking how difficult it is to grow Lucky Bamboo.   Lucky Bamboo is very easy to grow, keep them wet and out of direct sunlight.  Normal house temperature of 65 to 85 degrees is perfect.   You can assure the health of your Lucky Bamboo by following two simple rules.

  • Don't provide too much sun!  Lucky Bamboo grows  under the canopy of wet tropical rain forests in nature. If you are used to other house plants, you will surprised at how little sunlight your Lucky Bamboo needs to thrive. Indirect sunlight is best.  In fact, Lucky Bamboo is known to do very well in kitchens, bathrooms and offices with little direct light, but good fluorescent lighting.  Browning or yellowing of the tips of the leaves can be an indication of too much sunlight.
  • Lucky Bamboo must be kept wet. It prefers one to two inches of fresh filtered or distilled water. Even bottled water can leave deposits on the plants and containers, so we strongly recommend distilled water only.  Ideally water should be changed every other week, and topped off as needed in between.  Especially during times of adjustment for your Lucky Bamboo, we suggest the use of our Green/Green liquid fertilizer.  A few drops goes a long way to strong and healthy Lucky Bamboo.

And now you know everything you need to have happy healthy Lucky Bamboo plants and arrangements in your home or office.  Scroll down to see the Lucky Bamboo!

FAQ on Lucky Bamboo

1. WHAT IS LUCKY BAMBOO?

In ancient Asia, this plant was considered a member of the Bamboo family. It is however a Dracaena, specifically Dracaena Sanderiana. Two theories exist on its origination.  One leads us to  South East Asia, the other to Africa.  No matter where this plant originally called home,  it has been valued in China for centuries as a plant of good fortune.

2. WHERE DID THE TRADITION OF LUCKY BAMBOO BEGIN?

It is estimated that Bamboo has been a symbol of good fortune in Asian culture for more than 4000 years. Nature has always been a valued and inseparable aspect of life in Asia. Lucky Bamboo became valued because of its wonderful ability to adapt and grow in minimal and even poor light conditions.

Thus, it was an element of nature, which represented the good fortune, or auspiciousness, of Bamboo, that had the ability to thrive indoors.

3. HOW IS LUCKY BAMBOO USED IN THE PRACTICE OF FENG SHUI?

Feng Shui is the ancient practice of bringing the natural elements of water, fire, earth, wood and metal into balance in our surroundings. This is believed to produce greater harmony and a more positive life experience.

Lucky Bamboo is very valued as a perfect symbol of the wood element, which is defined by tall, thin, vertical shapes and the color green. This element is said to have an influence on life energy, growth, vitality and physical activity.

Because Lucky Bamboo is able to thrive in many areas of the home or workplace where other plants would not, it is valued as a means to enhance the positive flow of energy or "chi" in these areas.

4. WHY IS RED RIBBON OFTEN WRAPPED AROUND LUCKY BAMBOO STALKS?

The red ribbon symbolizes the element of fire. The addition of a little fire assists in enhancing or "igniting" the positive result that is desired.

5. WHAT DO THE VARIOUS NUMBERS OF STALKS MEAN?

Again, we are referring to very ancient cultural tradition. Asian wisdom has passed down the knowledge that certain numbers of stalks enhance certain positive aspects of life. These numbers are as follows:

- three stalks attract happiness
- five stalks attract wealth
- seven stalks result in good health
- twenty one stalks offer a very powerful all-purpose blessing.

6. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO KEEP LUCKY BAMBOO HEALTHY?

While Lucky Bamboo is considered extremely easy to grow, there are a few simple things that you can do to provide the perfect conditions for a long, healthy life.

A:  Don't Give it too much light!  No need to keep it in or near a window.
They do great in bathrooms, kitchens, even offices with nothing but
artificial light.  They will yellow if they get too much light.   Lucky Bamboo Grows naturally under the canopy of wet tropical rain forests. You might be surprised at how little sunlight your Lucky Bamboo needs to thrive. In general, the more indirect, the better.
B:  Use distilled water.  Depending on the water conditions in your area,
the chlorine and other chemicals could be too high for them.  And water IS
there life, so why not make it clean.  We completely change the water in
ours every 2 to 4 weeks.
Our experimentation has found that using Green/Green fertilizer creates the perfect  balance for optimal growth. Five drops per gallon of water will do, then just water with this mixture.

7. WHAT CAUSES THE LEAVES OF STALKS TO TURN YELLOW?

After considering the possibility of too much light, the next element to consider is the source of the water you are using. If you live in a city where fluoride is added to the water, or where the water has a high chlorine or salt content, one or a combination of these factors will cause this problem.

Yellowing is first seen at the tips of the leaves and then spreads throughout the whole stalk until it dies. It is vital to provide pure, clean water, either by adding an effective filtering system to your tap, or by purchasing water for this purpose. If you suspect that this is your problem, and you improve the quality of your water, allow time for healthy, new foliage to form before concluding that something else must be wrong.

8. CAN LUCKY BAMBOO BE PLANTED OUTDOORS?

No, we would not recommend planting Lucky Bamboo outdoors. It does not respond well to temperatures below 60 degrees F., must be kept very moist at all times, and cannot tolerate direct sun. Keep Lucky Bamboo inside where it will thrive and enhance your living or working environment.

9. WHAT KINDS OF AILMENTS AFFECT LUCKY BAMBOO?
Lucky Bamboo is susceptible to many of the same ailments as conventional houseplants. Treatment is easily achieved by using products available at your local home and garden center. We recommend products by "Safer" because they are safer for humans, pets, and the environment.

10. IS LUCKY BAMBOO TOXIC TO CHILDREN AND PETS?

It is completely non-toxic and safe for all situations.

11.   How are the spirals made in the bamboo?

Lucky Bamboo actually only grows straight. Farmers lay them on  long tables, cover 3 sides in the dark, one side has bright light and let them grow naturally toward the light, and manually rotate them periodically; more work, more curl. It takes an average of 1.5 years to make one spiral!

Can I get the bamboo plant stick to spiral?

Yes, you can do this yourself and make it curve like farmers do when the stick is fresh and young. The stick is not going to grow longer but it can turn when it feels the light coming from only one side for a length of time.
